First we had Easter, then Anzac Day, then Labour Day. The idea of commemorating events goes back to the Old Testament, where our Lord ordained a number of memorials. For instance, in Gen 9 we have the rainbow, in Ex 12 we have the Passover, in Lev 23 & 24 we have the Feast of Pentecost, the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement. In Josh 4 we have the memorial cairn to commemorate the dry-shod crossing of the Jordan. Our Lord ordained these memorials so His people (that includes us!) should not forget His love and provision for us. A major problem is mankind’s tendency to focus on the memorial and forget what that memorial is to remind us of – this was already happening when Paul was writing his epistles, the medieval church was deep into it, and I see it happening around us today. Many people don’t know what Easter is about, and they often don’t realize what the secular remembrances are about, though Anzac Day is better understood than Labour Day. Mel Gibson with his movie has done a lot to remind people what Easter commemorates, and he is to be commended. We should be doing what we can to help people remember (learn?) God’s goodness, May our Lord always guide and bless you in all things! Colin
You would like to see more in the Newsletter about activities in your area? So would I! I can only include information if it gets to me in the first place—I can’t run around and be a roving reporter! Everybody—group leaders, individuals, lone riders—is welcome to send in contributions, and I will include them if I have space available. Post them to me at 12 Oakwood St, Little Mountain 4551, or e-mail them to lyncol@caloundra.net Thanks Colin

THE WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT Our president is away on leave at
the time of writing, and last heard of somewhere around Lake Eyre, so I have
used this opportunity to put in some news from the Committee. Ed.
Management Committee Update Committee meetings have been a bit thin on the ground lately. It's been extremely difficult to try to get 5 people in the same place at the same time. While I realise it's not a good situation, there doesn't seem to be much I can do about it. New memberships are still coming in, with 3 more in the last couple of months. This is encouraging, but is being offset by existing members slipping out the back door. If anyone has ideas on how to retain members, please let us know. We ran our first sausage sizzle on 8th May in Gladstone in an effort to raise funds for the next lot of Insurance. We received a very generous donation from one of the local businesses earlier this year which enable us to stay afloat, but we don't feel that we can rely on other people's generosity to prop the organisation up on a continuing basis. We would appreciate other areas doing a bit of fund-raising towards the same end, and not just leave it to CQ to come up with the money. The results of the sausage sizzle were a bit disappointing with not much money raised from a lot of effort, but it was a good learning experience and we are confident of doing better next time. In the meantime, some of the areas have been raising funds for the "Bible for bikers' project which is getting under way. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the Motorcycling community. Please continue to uphold the Committee in your prayers. We can't do much unless God enables us. Keep riding for the Son. Alan

A NIGHT WITH GARY CLARK Remember in last December’s Newsletter I wrote about meeting Gary Clark, creator of “The Swamp” ? On the evening of 4th of May Gary came to Buderim to talk to CMA members and friends. It was not a large gathering – we all fitted into Ern’s loungeroom. There were 13 adults and 4 kids. Gary told how he trained in commercial illustration then worked for some years in advertising, developing his cartooning technique in his own time. From there he went to full-time cartooning as a magazine employee. He had drawn some Swamp cartoons in his own time, but didn’t think they were viable; his wife thought otherwise and sold them to a newspaper in Ipswich, and Gary was launched as an independent cartoonist! Later Gary and his wife went to USA to try and break into the potentially huge market there – they didn’t break in, but his wife sold Swamp to a visiting tycoon from Sweden and Gary was launched onto the European market – he now has quite an international exposure. (Mind you, if their movies are an accurate indication of the American humour, I doubt if the Swamp would have suited them.) Gary talked of how God had opened doors for him, and looked after his every need, especially during the years of getting established. Gary gave us some insight into how he produces his strips, and showed us the originals of some of his past work. He handed out some sheets of paper and got us all to do basic sketches of a cartoon of our own devising. He took us through some more basic steps of making a cartoon from a basic shape – pear-shape, oval, etc – and kept us entertained for some time. It was a stimulating and entertaining evening. Knowing the evening was being used as a fund-raiser for Bibles For Bikers, Gary donated some copies of older Swamp books for us to sell. Peter still has a few copies – they are going for $5, which is rather less than they would have cost in the newsagents. Prospective customers please contact Peter on 5448 9821. After Gary’s talk we enjoyed a cuppa, then home. The night raised $92 for Bibles For Bikers, and the sale of the remaining books will add to this. An enjoyable evening! Colin

The Bible Society was approached and are willing to help us. Criteria: · It needs to be small enough to fit into a bike jacket pocket.· It needs to be affordable so we can give away as many as possible for free.· It needs Australian motorcyclists’ testimonies and artwork. The plan is to produce a pocket sized Gospel of Mark (135mm x 91mm x 5mm) similar to the Rugby World Cup Edition which the Bible Society have produced. Naturally the artwork would be motorcycle related and there will be 5 testimonies from Aussie riders included. (Your testimony could be one of them.) We have been advised by the Bible Society that we need to order approx 15,000 copies at approx $1 each. Raising $15,000 may sound daunting, so to put it in perspective: CMA has approx 300 memberships Australia wide, so if each ‘membership’ were to donate (or pre-order) around $50 over the next 6 months, we will reach our target of $15,000. If other Christian Motorcycle clubs in each state are willing to help out, the target becomes even easier to reach. To date, CMA SA has raised $1,700 and WA has pledged $2,000. We aim to have the bibles produced by early 2005. How YOU can be involved in this project: · support in the form of prayer , donations and preorders.· ask other Christian Motorcyclist clubs, individuals in your state, and your Church for the same support.· send us your brief testimony. 500 –750 words, and bike related photos. The final 5 testimonies will be chosen by the Bible Society. This is a ministry tool we want to belong to all Australian Christian bike groups, so this will not be an official CMA bible. All comments or suggestions can be sent to CMA of Aust, SA Inc, PO Box 736, Modbury, SA 5092, or emailed to bikerbibles@hotmail.com Donations and pre-orders to be made out to CMA of Aust, SA Inc. We have opened a savings account specifically for this project.
Thank you for your support.

RIDE REPORT FOR BRISBANE CMA APRIL 2004 by TJ The April ride was to be a Memorial Ride on ANZAC Day in the tradition of last year until we realised it would fall on a Sunday and I was already organising a special segment in the Service at my own Church to pay our respects to those who had fallen in the World and other Wars. As happens from time to time, another angle for a ride emerged after talking bikes with a Rotary friend who also happens to be a BMW peddler and also the local Salvation Army Major. The proposal was that we should attend the Salvation Army Chapel at Wynnum to share a meal and some testimonies. From this it was automatic that a ride would precede such an offer. So, our April ride started from the Yatala BP South of Beenleigh on Sunday afternoon 2nd May at 3.00PM. Oli, Joe, Handley, Dave, Merv and TJ from CMA and Roscoe, Rod, Dave & his lad, Wayne on a trike with 2 children and one more rider all from Bikers 4 Christ (sorry, can’t remember names of the last rider). We headed off to Jacobs Well with ten bikes and were up to 11 by the time we left Jacobs Well. While at Jacobs Well we had the opportunity to talk with other bike enthusiasts as well as check out the fishing and camping facilities. The next stage was to Pimpama through the cane fields and TJ got everyone off and down a dead end when he missed the correct exit off the roundabout to join the motorway. Roscoe got us back on track when we all turned round - at least he knew where we had gone wrong. Up the motorway to the Cleveland turn off and then to Wynnum via Venman Reserve, Mt Cotton, Capalaba & Manly and arriving at Wynnum with 5 minutes before start time. Here we met up with Brian Eugarde and Maddy Ryan so that made 16 of us including the young folk. Les S. and his team had laid out a splendid feast which we all got into after introductions. Between courses the Salvation Army folk were given an overview of the two organisations and how our Ministries differ from - say God’s Squad. Several testimonies were shared and how we make Jesus our focus. I guess our image as bikers also underwent some restructure in the minds of those who have only been exposed to the negative aspects of motorcycling. Maddy shared on her trip to the Ulysses AGM complete with photos and also explained her ministry. We thank Les & Dianne Shaw and their congregation for the very warm welcome and the wonderful meal and fellowship we enjoyed. T-J SUNCOAST GROUP REPORT TWILIGHT RIDE REPORT 10TH MARCH 2004 After a hot day at work I got ready for our twilight ride. Angela and I rode off at 4:40pm, we got to the BP spot on 5:00pm, Bill and Gwen were there waiting with Barry on his Suzuki, along with Manfred and Helga. With greetings all around, soon Colin Webber rode up to join us. We all chatted for a while and notice that the clouds were rolling up very quickly, so it was time for a prayer. I led us in prayer and asked the lord not to send us “showers of blessings ” just yet. Soon we rode off up the highway, then into Kiel Mountain road onto Bli Bli, down past Dunethin Rock. We followed the road just short of Yandina, then turned into the Yandina-Coolum road that took us through to Coolum Beach. Barry had to leave us here and head back home. So the rest of us headed into the “Coffee Club” for a bite to eat, and fellowship time together. “Espresso Coffee ” any one? Just ask Gwen. Time moved on and soon it was time to head home. With hugs and handshake all around, and a big thank you to our Lord for not sending the “ Showers of Blessings ” we all headed off back to our homes. Round trip for Angela and me 74 Klms Keep riding for the Son, Peter M.
CHURCH RUN SUNDAY 21ST MARCH 2004 .After a very wet night of rain I awoke to perfect blue skies. Today was to be an early start, meeting at the Rustic Cabin at 8:00 AM. I was on time today Bill and Gwen where already there waiting. After a short prayer we were on our way to the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church at Beerwah. We were all made to feel welcome and were greeted by Mal Cavenett leader of a motorcycle club “The Remnant in Christ” a local from Glasshouse Mountains. The service began at 9:00 the Pastor preached on “ Submissive mind – examples of Timothy found in Phillipians” He also told us that “We are the sheep, where are our Lambs?” In wrapping up he told about J- O- Y, Jesus first, Others second, You last. Following the service we stayed on for a cuppa and a chat to the people. Mal and some of the others had been on a ride the day before up to Gympie and Rainbow Beach, in which some were on trail bikes so they came back along the beach. By now people were starting to go home so we said our good byes and headed on way home also. Thank you Lord for a great day out, round trip for me 94 Klms. Keep riding for the Son. Peter M. RIDE REPORT MONDAY 3RD MAY 2004 The alarm went of at 5:45am, it’s time to get up, get ready for the big ride. With clear blue skies I set off to meet up the riders at the BP. 6:50 am I arrived a few riders where there waiting. By 7:15am we had nine [9] bikes ready to roll out. I invited the Lord to guide and keep us safe on the road today. 7:25am with Colin W. leading the way we rode out up the Highway towards Gympie. A few riders stopped to refuel, mean while Colin M. to check the air in his rear tyre, “a bit low ” he said, while the rest rode on to McDonalds. We all had a mixed breakfast with hamburgers, muffins, pancakes, and yogurt and plus coffee Rod L. had already arrived there [well into the coffee] Our second leaders for today, Mike and Bev, who live at Gympie, had not yet arrived. I was checking in with Colin M. to see if he would lead us to Boreen Point. Colin was having a coffee with Handley and Warrick who had just arrived from Brisbane to join us on the ride, when Mike and Bev rode into McDonalds. 9:20am, time to move, with 17 bikes, Mike led the way through Gympie towards Cedar Pocket Dam. A lot more water here than last time we were by here. Then into Kin Kin at this stage the group broke into two [2] groups, with Mike leading one and Bev lead the other group. Soon we all arrived at Boreen Point to stretch our legs and a bit of a chat. 10:45am time to move on. This time I was the leader as we headed back towards Tewantin and Coolum Beach. We stopped at Point Perry to take in the view of the ocean and the rocks below us.[This was a very busy car park with motor bikes] 11:45am time to move on again back to my home at Mudjimba for a BBQ lunch. With seventeen [17] bike out the front of our home we had few comments from the neighbors [good ones that is] My wife Angela greeted us as we all arrived as did Gwen, Helga, Lyn and Pam [Rod’s mother] a surprise for Rod. After a blessing we all got into the food that the ladies had prepared for us [thank you very much] Time moves so quickly, 1:20pm, well it’s time to move on. Col W., Ern, Manfred and Annette left the group and headed back to their homes. From Mudjimba, Colin M. led the way to the Caltex Service Station at Bli Bli to check his rear tyre, and some of us filled up with petrol. Colin then led us up the range to Mapleton, Montville and onto Mary Cairncross Park at Maleney. It was really too busy to stop, so Rod and some of the other riders kept going. Bill did a “U-turn here and headed back home. Mike and Bev said “ farewell ” also. With just five [5] of us left we headed past the show ground, turned left away from Maleney, I got caught up in some traffic and lost sight of the group. There they are pulled over by the police for a RBT on the side of the road, so I rode past, then waited for them to catch up to me this time. We rode further on to Bellthorpe, and then Colin took us along some windy, up and down roads. Soon we were back on track again; we stopped at Reece Park near Woodford to reflect on the day. By 4:35pm it was time to go home, as we said our final farewells Phill, Handley and Warrick rode off towards Caboolture. Colin and I headed back up the Peachester Range to Beerwah then home just before 6:00pm. After tea Rod L. rang me to report that his group had arrived home safe. I also check up on the Brisbane guys, all ok down there. Then I rang Bev and Mike, and Mike was already sound asleep in his armchair. I’m sure that I have left a lot out of this report, such a long long day. Round trip for me 373Klms. Thank you Lord for a great day out in Your creation. As this was a fund raiser event for “Bibles for Bikers” we raised $68:00 for the day. Keep riding for the Son, Peter M.

There were about 5500 registered attendees, not quite as many as I had expected given that Geelong was a reasonably short ride for members in Victoria and even NSW. Ulysses Club is a secular organization, but there are members who are Christian, and for the benefit of those there was as usual an ecumenical service on Sunday morning, with a roll up of 100+ people. The Bureau of Statistics tells us that Christians make up about 5% of Australia’s population – I would expect the proportion to be about the same in Ulysses Club. This year there was, for the first time, an extra feature – CMA Victoria had a stand there, manned by Barry H. and Alan A. They had some photos and information on CMA activities, leaflets to hand out. I don’t know how big an impact they had, but I know that one of the folk camped near me said he had called there and got info. and planned to join up. Barry and Alan deserve commendation for the effort they put in there. I think it should be a regular feature at future Ulysses AGMs, and I would like to see it supported (manned) by people from all branches, not just the local one. Meantime we should include next year’s AGM – scheduled for Canberra – in our prayers. Remember Jesus died for all of us – and that includes Ulyssians! Colin

We had Steve, Graham, Tony, Paul,Geoff & Beth, Trevor, Warren, and Julie & I. When we arrived in Woodgate, we were met by Dennis & Christine from Maryborough, and Tim who's moved from Brisbane to Hervey Bay. After getting some lunch, we lazed around the back yard for a while, until some of the more energetic types went for a swim. Tony & Tim had been for a walk, and arrived back having seen Charlsie but not recognised him(?). How could that happen??? They went off & escorted Charlsie back to the house accompanied by several decibels. A little while after lunch, my mate John from Maryborough turned up on his Bandit 1200 and stayed for a yack. Later on, John, Tim, Dennis & Christine headed back to Maryborough. Trevor and Warren had diverted to Bundaberg to visit family. We headed off to the Bowls Club for tea, and had a good meal at a very reasonable price, then back to the house to bunk down for the night. It wasn't quite earthquake level, but the snoring was pretty close to it during the night. After breakfast Sunday morning we took off to Bundaberg to do a Church Raid on the Wesleyan Methodist Church we had visited last August after the AGM. There we met Trevor & Julie, Warren, Tina, Bert & Alison and Neil & Jacky. We just about outnumbered the locals, but weren't able to finish off the "light lunch" they put on afterwards. Trevor preached a great message on 'Grace', and everyone had a terrific time with Tina & Beth leading the service. Charlsie gave his testimony (at short notice) which fitted the topic of the sermon perfectly. We had an uneventful ride home Sunday afternoon which is just what we needed.

TOWNSVILLE REPORT Saturday the 1st of May we had a day ride to Forest Beach, which is just up past Ingham. We all met at Shelly's Diner at 8am. John, Stacy, Adrian, Steve and David A. Peter saw us off, but couldn't come as his bike needed new tires. Angelo C couldn't make it as he hurt his leg when he dropped his bike(again). After a week of rain, the weather was suddenly perfect on Saturday just for our ride! Blue sky, not too hot and not too cold. We were pulled over on the way up for random license checks, but other than that the ride up was relaxing and uneventful. We stopped at a nice little pub in Forest Beach and sat out in the garden area near the pool which had a little fountain in it, and we all had a delicious lunch of grilled fish and salad, (although Steve had a big juicy steak instead of the fish). We all enjoyed the fellowship as we sat around chatting about God for a few hours before it was time to head back. Besides a couple of mysterious headaches, the ride back was refreshing and we all got home safe and sound before sundown. Stacy
Hiya everyone and God bless. Sorry for the delays as we have been very busy. Our first ride to Mingela on the 28th of March was both a blessing and a treat. Dave N suggested this ride to Mingela describing a free lunch if you buy a drink (alcoholic), so we gave it a burl and we were all delighted with the very friendly, country atmosphere, the lunch was an assortment of 3 roast meats and roast vegies. Although the facilities were probably prestige some odd 70 years ago ;-) the old wood finish (rust included) gave the meal a true bushie taste and I am sure that all the members that did attend had their best lunch this side of Christmas. Then we had our monthly meeting on Sunday the 11th of April in which we all gathered at Dave N's place for a BBQ in which Dave did all the cooking and catering, this man has many hidden charms, Thanx Dave. Every one of our members turned up to this meeting except one family, so this was our biggest get together and most relaxing. Some members brought cars so that all could attend. The meal was Fab and a fantastic day was had by all. Stacy is going send you a mail describing our last ride to Forest beach on Saturday the 1st of May, but I have attached the pics to this mail as I have the Mingela ride. ps: Oh and I am not sure if your interested?? but I have just come into possession of a professionally recorded song from a bloke in America who produced a song (while in Africa) about CMA called "Riding for the Son" We will be playing it for our group this Sunday at our meeting, if you would like me to send an MP3 of it to you all please let me know. Bless you and yours Yours in Christ Jesus' service John & Stacy for TVL CMA Bikes at Mingela
