Due to work commitments, it's been
12 months since my last rally, so I was eagerly
watching the calendar roll around to 13 May for the
Great Escape Rally, run by the MRA.
Rolling up to the campsite near Marrabel,
Naomi, Patrick and I were greeted by all the familiar
faces from all over SA- the regular patrons of these
events. How embarrassing when they know me by name,
but I can't remember who they are! Admittedly, a lot of them know me as just
"Naomi's husband."
All the stuff I love about these events was there in
abundance. The
picturesque green farmlands, smell of wood smoke in
the air, campfires, walking around to check out bikes/
trailers/ sidecars, chatting to people (whose names I
can't remember) and a chance to just kick back and
enjoy the weekend.
Simon brought 4 year old Ben along in the car
for his first rally.
The kids all had a great time collecting
interesting pieces of wood and burning them.
Even though this rally is catered, I still
dragged along the jaffle iron to make my dinner. For
me, it's all part of the fun of camping.
The MRA still had the fresh donuts for sale,
but alas, no movie this year. I was most disappointed
the gymkhana wasn't run this year, because Naomi
couldn't win me any bottles of port.
What a top
weekend. As a bonus, it didn't rain, either!
